A Confusion of Guinea Fowl

New to Our Shop: Heidi Caillard's Iconic Ceramic Guinea Fowl from Lussan, France

At Welcome Home, we’re obsessed with the art of a well-appointed home—and nothing captures our hearts quite like something both beautiful and storied. That’s why we’re beyond excited to introduce the beloved ceramic guinea fowl from Lussan, France, now available in all Welcome Home locations.

These whimsical, hand-painted birds are more than just decorative sculptures. They are true works of art, lovingly crafted by the Caillard family workshop in the tiny French village of Lussan—recognized as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (The Most Beautiful Villages of France).

With their voluptuous bodies, slender necks, and warm, rich colors, these guinea fowl are elegant, joyful, and unmistakably French.

A Legacy of Artistry and Craft

The very first ceramic guinea fowl was imagined by Heidi Caillard in the 1970s, inspired by the real birds strutting through her garden. After studying fine arts in Basel and ceramics in Lausanne, Heidi opened a workshop in Blauzac before settling in Lussan in 1968 with her husband Daniel. Together, they restored an old farmhouse (once owned by the ancestors of writer André Gide!) and turned it into a studio filled with life, color, and charm.

In 1974, the Lussan atelier officially opened—and the iconic ceramic guinea fowl was born. Each bird is hand-sculpted and painted using a technique that gives it a distinct, glowing warmth. No two are exactly alike, and each one is a testament to timeless design, inspired by the natural world.

Today, Heidi’s son Adrien Caillard continues the family tradition, leading the workshop and shipping these sculptural hens to collectors around the world—all while preserving the handmade processes that make each one so special.
